Running for Mental Health: Great North Run 2024

Sunday was a big day for me. I took part in the Great North Run 2024, something that’s become an annual tradition for me—but it’s more than just a race. Running is my therapy. It’s how I manage the ups and downs of life, and how I deal with my mental health.

I woke up early, full of nerves. The weather wasn’t great, and to be honest, I hadn’t prepared as much as I would have liked. My knees were giving me trouble, and a torn calf had set me back in my training. But I made a promise to myself—I’d finish, no matter what.

For me, running isn’t just about physical fitness. It’s about mental clarity. When I run, it’s like everything else fades away, and I can just focus on the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other. It helps me process thoughts, step back from worries, and gain a bit of perspective. Sometimes, it’s as simple as breaking the race down, kilometre by kilometre, knowing that every step is getting me closer to the finish line.

Sunday’s run was my 16th Great North Run, and despite the knee pain, I finished in 2 hours and 21 minutes. The crowd, the atmosphere, and the sense of accomplishment at the end—it’s hard to put into words how much that means. I even found a little extra energy for a final push in the last 500 metres, which was just the boost I needed to cross the line with a smile on my face.

This isn’t about my time or my performance. It’s about showing up, for myself, for my mental health. We all have different ways of coping, and for me, running is that outlet. It gives me a sense of control, a way to clear my mind, and a way to keep going even when life throws challenges my way.
